Aiken Standard: Lawyer enters race for Moore’s seat

Shane Massey moved to Edgefield with his family 17 years ago and graduated from Strom Thurmond High School.

An Aiken attorney, he announced his intention to seek the S.C. Senate seat vacated by Tommy Moore last Saturday.

Massey, president of the Aiken Republican Club, is unfazed that he may be competing against Strom Thurmond Jr., the son of the late legendary senator whose name graces Massey’s alma mater.

If Thurmond chooses to run, said Massey, “It’s fine. Anybody who wants to represent the people can run, and I have no qualms about taking him on. Competition is good, and it would be a tough race against him. But I’m not going to back out just because Strom is in the race.”

Thurmond said Wednesday that he is weighing the possibility of seeking the Senate seat. He acknowledged he would have to move his family from Aiken to the family farm between Aiken and Ridge Spring to meet the residency requirement. Senate District 25 includes all of Edgefield County and parts of Aiken, Saluda and McCormick counties.

S.C. Rep. Bill Clyburn, D-Aiken, said he definitely plans to enter the race. Aiken County Council Chairman Ronnie Young said Thursday he has yet to decide whether to seek the seat.

Moore resigned after 26 years in the Senate to take a position with Washington, D.C.-based Community Financial Services Association, a trade association for the payday lending industry.

Massey, who still lives in Edgefield, said he was shocked to hear of Moore’s resignation from the Senate last weekend.

“I had thought about running for office for a while,” he said, “and always wanted to serve in that capacity. The primary is in just over two months, and there’s not much time to do the work. I’m excited about the opportunity to meet a lot of people and will talk to as many of them as I can.”

Massey graduated from Clemson University in 1997 with a B.A. in chemistry and a minor in economics. After completing the University of South Carolina School of Law in 2000, Massey spent a year as a judicial clerk for Judge William Keesley of the 11th Judicial Circuit. He has been an associate attorney for Nance & McCants since 2001, specializing in civil defense litigation, including representing physicians in medical malpractice lawsuits.

Filing for the Senate seat will begin Friday, July 27, at noon and continue through Monday, Aug. 6, at noon. Political party primaries are scheduled Tuesday, Sept. 18, and if necessary, runoffs will be held Oct. 2. The special general election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 6.
