Income Tax Cuts and Hard Work Will Create Jobs
Filed Under News, Uncategorized
Shane Massey today released the first of his 5 Point Plan to Shake Up Columbia. Shane’s first point concentrates on job creation, which we can accomplish if we cut the state’s income tax and work hard to recruit new companies.
Shane says that economic development is multi-tiered and will take more than just tax cuts, but income tax cuts will help create a pro-business environment. Job creation also relies on our ability to improve our public education system so that we can provide a skilled workforce for employers, fight illegal immigration, and reign in state spending. Shane will release plans on those issues later this week.
SHANE ON INCOME TAX CUTS
Governor Mark Sanford is right. Although some candidates for this State Senate seat have actively tried to remove Governor Sanford from office, I believe his agenda to create jobs through income tax cuts is exactly what we should be doing to create a pro-business environment. Last year the state legislature relieved some of the property tax burden on families, and although they recently cut some personal income taxes, it’s vital that we do more.
Currently SC has one of the highest income tax rates in the nation. That tax rate is keeping employers from coming to SC, which is one of the main reasons we continue to have one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation and why our area in particular continues to hurt.
As State Senator I will work with Governor Sanford and members of the House and Senate from both parties to cut a combination of personal and business income taxes. From an individual standpoint, cutting more income taxes will help working families keep more of their own money, giving them more money to spend, and spurring our economy. Cutting business income taxes will give South Carolina a competitive edge in industry recruitment and small business start-up.
Income tax cuts can happen if we reign in state spending and eliminate wasteful pork barrel projects, which we will outline later this week.
SHANE ON HARD WORK
The biggest problem with Columbia is that our elected officials would rather play politics than find solutions to the problems plaguing South Carolina. Governor Carroll Campbell taught us that we can recruit high paying industry to South Carolina if we quit bickering and work together. However, politicians in South Carolina are fighting like never before while South Carolina’s families continue to suffer.
Take illegal immigration for instance. This year Congress dropped the ball and failed to pass meaningful immigration reform. All other Southeastern states strengthened their immigration laws while South Carolina’s remained the weakest, giving illegal aliens a place to run. The State Senate and State House passed legislation strengthening our laws and Governor Sanford vowed to sign them, but the measurers got tangled up in political infighting and nothing was ever accomplished.
We will not fix our unemployment problems until we shake up the status quo in Columbia. As State Senator, I will not play politics with the well being of South Carolina’s families. I’ll work as hard as I can to build bridges in the Senate and the House, across the aisle and with the Governor and Department of Commerce.
We must stop playing politics with job creation. It’s time for politicians to stop throwing mud. We can create jobs if we come together and do the hard work it takes to recruit new companies to South Carolina.
